During his 30-year career in the Navy, Todd Sullivan often heard the phrase “Mission first, people always.” Too often this meant mission at all costs--on the backs of our people. 

Todd believes that if we employ a people always mindset, the team will accomplish the mission with a sense of fulfillment. People are our top asset, the difference between good and great, and the reason we enjoy success. If we want our organizations to excel, we must adopt a people always mindset.

Todd is a Christian, husband, dad, athlete, coach, and 30-year veteran of the United States Navy. He’s held positions in corporate HR, been CEO of a start-up, and now co-owns a CrossFit gym and his own coaching business. Todd is an avid reader and loves spending time with his wife, Amy.

In today’s episode, we cover many of the steps on Todd’s long and fruitful coaching journey. We talk quite a bit about the challenges of self-promotion for coaches, and how it’s really all about helping people get to know and trust you a bit…before you’ve even had the chance to meet! We also talk about the intimacy and vulnerability of coaching, and the ways in which good coaching is contagious in all the best ways.

Todd talks about how he became comfortable charging for his services, what it means to deliver organizational improvement, and how important it is to always be focused on the people in any initiative.

Todd is an incredibly talented, natural coach. His whole-person approach challenged me to think beyond just “my professional mission” and focus more on redeveloping a life that would capitalize on my passions and strengths.
